Core Cities

Core Cities Group represents the local authorities of England’s eight largest city economies outside London: Birmingham; Bristol; Leeds; Liverpool; Manchester; Newcastle; Nottingham; and, Sheffield. These cities drive local regional and underpin national economies.
Working in partnership, we aim to enable each City to enhance their economic performance and make them better places to live, work, visit and do business.
The Core Cities Group has a track record of more than 10 years, led by the City Leaders, taking in all three major political parties. It is a self-selected and self funded group.
What’s special about us?
The Core Cities together with their surrounding urban areas – their city regions:
- are home to 16 million people, almost a third of the population of England.
- generate 27% of England’s wealth (more than London).
- are home to half of the country’s leading research universities; and,
- contain 28% of highly skilled workers (graduate level or above).
We are a united voice for the importance of our cities in delivering our country’s full economic potential, creating more jobs and improving people’s lives. Our cities already contribute more than a quarter of England’s wealth, and with more freedoms and flexibilities, the Core Cities are best placed to improve the UK’s economic fortunes. Our cities are a vital delivery partner for Government and its agencies.
How do we work?
By generating new thinking, drawing on experience and evidence from our cities and elsewhere, and working to collectively improve performance and delivery. We publish agenda setting research on economic policy affecting our cities, and maintain a constructive and open dialogue with Ministers, MP’s, national and regional agencies and Government officials. We also work closely with business representatives and other public sector agencies to create the right policy environment for our cities to thrive.
