Professor Ruth Chambers
Ruth has been a family doctor for 30 years and is Honorary Professor of Primary Care at Staffordshire University. Her previous research interests have focused on self care, effective ways of working, stress in health professionals, and many other health related themes in various healthcare settings.
Ruth often works with the Royal College of General Practitioners, Department of Health and other healthcare organisations on various projects.
Most of Ruth’s teaching and quality initiatives have related to improving performance and effective ways of working in the health service. Ruth has written around 70 books, mainly for health professionals, but two of the latest are for the general public on heart disease and back pain. Four books have been translated into other languages – Japanese, Italian and Korean. A good many of the books have become core texts for University degrees and awards.
These days Ruth is a part-time GP in North Staffordshire with lots of roles in NHS Stoke on Trent – including co-leading a local quality improvement scheme and the delivery of underpinning learning & development. She is a clinical lead for GP commissioning; and clinical champion for the Lifestyle Programme too, helping to establish and evaluate the NHS Health Check programme – now in place across the City.
