Ron was born in Glasgow and educated in Milngavie. He gained a degree in Civil Engineering from Glasgow University and a postgraduate MBA from Strathclyde University.

He is a member of the Institution of Civil Engineers and the Chartered Institution of Water and Environmental Management.

On leaving University, Ron joined the water industry working for Strathclyde Regional Council Water Department. After many years in various roles covering design office, site work and operational roles, he moved to Tayside Water Services as Divisional Manager for the Angus area.  

In 1996, he assisted in the setting up of the North of Scotland Water Authority and over the following six years he held various posts including Director of Operations - Highland and Islands and latterly Director of Asset Management.

In 2002, he left the water industry and formed his own consultancy business providing services to a range of customers including Faber Maunsell, Yorkshire Water, Balfour Beatty, George Leslie, May Gurney and Highland Council – Social Work Department.

In late 2003, he joined Network Rail and in the following six years has enjoyed an extremely interesting period of change in the rail industry. Devolution of further powers to the Scottish Government has helped to promote a period of renaissance in the rail industry with much investment being made in improving and extending the network in Scotland.
